Title: Why is PMR more popular in the NW
Post by: CT4013 on Aug 31, 2026, 07:23 PM
I saw the log for a Sunday PMR net in the NW of England & there were 73 in the log.
I see in general that net's (PMR & 11M) up north are always more popular than in the south.
Any ideas as to why?

I can answer that question with the below formula.

More high ground x bigger area cover = more stations in the log (HG x BAC = MSITL)

Could it be that some of the nets have had big YouTubers promoting them or they have a big Facebook following?

It also seems that there are more "hamfest" and radio rallies up north as well.

Whilst I agree with your formula Ray, a new (3 weeks old) net also up north held on Tuesdays had 80 in their log so I don't think their social media presence is that great at the moment.

But 70-80 in the log can't leave much if any time for a chat, I am reminded of "Get your name in the log". ::)

60 - 80 in the log is impressive.
I wonder if it's run like a contest station. Callsign, name, location, RS report, 73 and then repeat?

I have noticed that radio does seem more popular in the north, with more nets and radio rallies.
Maybe it's just a northern thing. . . 🤷

The Tuesday net on CH16 appears to have 3 controllers on high ground.
Controllers can be heard on the Jodrell 2 SDR which is HERE (http://g0xbuwebsdr.ddns.net:8902/)

NOTE: select 446 & FM from the top right buttons then click the blue button (CLICK TO START AUDIO) then select Ch16.
